TIP #1: The vast majority of car rental companies will require the use of a Credit card for the booking. This enables them to trace a person to charge additional fees if a defect is later found with the car. This card needs to be in your name, else you wont be able to make the booking.
Tip #2: Make sure you insist on a quality and clean motor. Hertz (UK) once tried to fob me off with a Ford Mondeo with its hub cap missing and the bodywork covered in bird droppings. This despite having spent many hundreds in car rental with them previously.
Tip #3: During the customary inspection with the auto reservation sales person, make a point of checking for the vehicles manuals. These may be needed in an emergency, or for understanding any enhanced features the vehicle may have.
Tip #4: Some newer cars will have a Parking Line on the door rear-view mirror. This looks like a crack in the glass, so don't be concerned if you think you damaged this mirror during your reservation period.
Tip #5: On returning the hired car, many companies will clean the car exterior for you. Check this though, incase you need to put the vehicle through a car wash before returning.
I hope my auto reservation tips help you have a successful experience, and do enjoy your trip!
